Car buying... Yup, i'm still deciding!

So, I need some input here, because I have no idea what to do with my first car search right now. I do want to say right off the bat that I may look spoiled here since I have a $25,000 (+ $2,000 for the right car) budget, but i'm having a real hard time deciding. I have my choice narrowed down to Four cars right now, and would love some advice! Before I start, I want to say that no, I will not consider a used version of any of these vehicles*. It's gonna be a new purchase. (*is for number 3 on the list, so if you want skip to that...) If you can't tell already, this is a text heavy post, so skip to the bottom for a TL;DR!

Here's a car for a lead image, to get y'all excited!

Kinja'd!!!

Now, without further a due, my choices.

1. 2014 V6 Mustang.
Before you ask, YES it has to be a V6. Why? because MPG's, insurance cost, and safety. NO, a used 4.6 doesn't work, because it's gonna be a new car. The reason why I like the mustang is because a local dealer is having a special on them. The base V6's are around $19K, while a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I love is just shy of $24K. For a new 300hp RWD coupe with leather and satnav, that's a steal! It's a cool car, and it's a quick car, but it's not the most practical, bringing me to choice #2!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

2. 2014 Juke NISMO with Nav. Pkg (or NISMO RS without nav Pkg)
Yup. I'm still looking at this thing! and now with my new, bigger budget (thanks family!) I can get the "wild child" RS trim! Thing is, if I do that, i'm missing out on the sound system, navigation, and rear view camera. My local dealer has 2 Black (best color on them IMO) RS's with manuals in stock right now actually. thing is, no Nav Pkg, which is a must for me on the car. You may be asking "why not get a normal juke NISMO with the package and a manual?" Because it's easier to find the holy grail than that combo of trim and goodies. the RS with the package is too pricey for me. Still I like the fact it's unique, and different!

3. 2014 Jetta GLI Base.
So, the GLI. the practical GTi. I love this car. it is the perfect car in every sense of the word IMO. fast. cool. tunable. affordable. comfortable and practical. Thing is I can't find a base one (the one I can afford) anywhere. my hope is my local dealer can source one, but i'm not too sure on it. if they can, i'm getting one, no questions asked but right now i'm skeptical. The * is for the fact that I can get a Certified pre owned one with 20K on it for about $22K. Then it'd be a top-of-the-line Autobahn, with EVERYTHING on it. This is a good idea, but it will probably sell by the time I get back from my Serbia trip...

4. Civic Si Coupe.
This is an odd one. I love this car. I have been driven in a '12 Si by a friend (who is a girl, and a "street racer") and I loved how it drove. they're also very much in my budget. the tech is also very appealing to me. Problem is the image that it has is.... less than what I want

So, what do I do? Help!!! Can I get any input on what to get? advice? Personally, i'd get the mustang because it's a $31K car for $24K, but the GLI (if I can find one) is my dream car... the Juke is awesome because of it's unique-ness, and I love the civic's character on the road. mehhhh.... decisions are hard...

TL;DR: 16yo kid trying to decide how to spend money, and has a choice of v6 mustang, Nissan juke nismo, VW Jetta GLI, and a Honda Civic Si

Juke NISMO, although the NISMO RS, GLI, and Civic Si are so close, it's not even funny. The mustang has a bit more grunt to weight, but it's a small difference again

If you like all of them, then you can't go wrong!

Just wondering why the nav package is a must on the Juke, surely you can afford a GPS or smartphone in a family with a budget that generous? I've always preferred Google Maps to the few OEM systems I've tried anyway.

1. Why does it have to be a brand new car?

2. I wouldn't buy a '14 Mustang when we all know the all-new '15 is right around the corner. Which is why your dealer is discounting them.

3. Have you ever considered impressing your parents by finding something for less than the maximum money they have offered?

Out of those I recommend the Mustang, because that's what I'd pick given those 4 options, but you are 16, shouldn't you be driving a 2003 Taurus with at least 110,000 miles on it? Not trying to be a dick here, if you have the means, or your parents NEED you to have a new car, by all means take advantage, just curious.

Oh man, I would so wish to be in your position. Personly I wouldnt be too interested in the Mustang, though it is a great proposition. Skrew the people who say its for show, you bought it because you know what it can do. Also, on the Juke, I think it is quite cool and rare in RS Manual, but understand the lack of Nav issue. In my Opinion I wont even consider the Si, because the GLI exists. If you can get the GLI loaded I would go for it in CPO.

Other options I know could be the Beetle Turbo which would mix the sportiness of the GLI and the fun of the Juke.

But thats just my very Volkswagen biased Opinion!

It's hard to give advice without knowing more about your needs.

You list practicality as a concern.

Since you're 16 I'm assuming you don't have any children. Or a corporate job where you take people out to lunch and therefore need usable back seats.

What kinds of things do you do that require a practical car?

My motto is to enjoy coupes while you can. Because once life changes you may be forced to get a sedan, CUV, SUV, wagon, etc.

V6 Mustang is superior to all of those, but you would live on with the v8 inferiority complex. You could easily find a low mile 2013 GT for that price range.

Who is insisting upon the newness? Your "must be new" thing doesn't really make sense since you are clearly breaking that for the Jetta (which IMO is the least appealing of the bunch).

So V6 mustang. Or v8 mustang.

Everyone will come to shit on the Civic Si, but it's a pretty sweet car. It definitely has the best shifter and clutch of these four. It also has a sweeter sounding engine than the VW. Quieter at idle and more frenetic at the redline.

Then again, we probably don't see eye-to-eye because you stated that the GLI is the practical GTI, when in my mind a four-door GTI is far more practical since it has four doors, a usable back seat and can fit awkward-shaped furniture and boxes in the hatch, which is pretty nice.

IMO, the GLI is more practical because rear leg room and a bigger trunk Cu-Ft wise. And I agree, the civic is a great choice but I dislike the Si crowd. it's either "HEY BRAH I GOT V-TEC BRAH" types of people, it's street racer types, showing off with their SkunkII setups. There is no comparison between a new RWD car in the rain vs. an older one with no traction control.

07/18/2014 at 17:09

I think the ft^3 measure for trunk space is pretty meaningless unless you carry suitcases or bags. For boxes, what really matters is what can fit through the opening, and every trunk opening is smaller than a potential hatch opening. Since turning 16, I've had two sedans and still have to borrow other people's cars to move things that weren't big (like a 20x20x20" box), but were too big to fit in my car because they couldn't get into the trunk.

Edit: I should add that I typically run into this problem because I have hobbies that involve things like furniture and big pieces of wood.

Fair enough about the Si crowd, especially owners of older Civics, but as a Honda owner who isn't an obnoxious douche, I just hang out with people who have other cars and don't worry that I'm not with "my people." I am super happy with my Honda because I can spend my time driving my car instead of learning to enjoy its quirky faults. Did you read the post yesterday from the guy who rented a Beetle that had A/C that only worked at certain speeds, and cut out at other speeds? Even under warranty...seriously?

I'd opt for a Mustang V6 Premium with the Performance Package - I think that should be within your price range. It can be had with optional Recaro seats, but those are much rarer and would likely be out of your price range.

Kinja'd!!!

Is there a particular deadline you have for this purchase? The new Mustang will be in dealer lots by September and the EcoBoost variant's base trim starts at ~$25k, though I can understand if you don't want to deal with possible markups and likely less content.

The GLI sounds good, as does the Civic Si coupe (provided you go for the refreshed 2014 coupe, which is better-looking IMO).

No, Yes, No (Practical GTi? The GTi is a practical GTi), No.

For $24k and what you are looking for, Fiesta ST no question. If it's the appearance/space that bothers you about it, Sonic RS with $200 Trifecta tune.

Or, and this is the advice of a 25 year old man who has made some really awful financial decisions in his life, get something cheap. Ask your parents (who I assume are buying the car, if not, heed my advice) if you can get something under budget and put the rest of the budget into a fund of some kind.

Honestly, as much as it's going to sound awful right now, if you got a $15,000 car and had them put $10,000 into a CD for ~5-6 years (or some other account that earns interest), it'd be really, really great if you could save that money until after college.

When I left school I had nothing but a really supportive family. I had some money I'd earned from working, but not much at all. If I had $10k + a few years of interest? Oh boy. The things you could buy would be magical. Imagine leaving college with a well paying job and $10k+ to put towards a house, or to buy a project car, or to put towards a real sports car as a down payment...the mature adult in me is drooling at the thought of it.

You're young. You have plenty of time to have fun cars, and all cars are fun when they're your first. What would be my choice of a cheap car if it has to be brand new? A Mitsubishi Mirage. I haven't driven one, but I want to. It looks like fun, pretty practical, unique enough to be interesting (you can get it in bright colors), and I bet it'd be fun as fuck to toss around an autocross course. Other options would be base Fiesta's or Sonics (if you get a Sonic, get the 1.4T and thank me later), the new Mazda 2, a Honda Fit, etc. Use your imagination.

TL;DR: Be responsible, get something cheap, have your parents put money aside for you when you're an adult, come back and thank me when you have a new M4/ShelbyGT/Corvette/F-Type in 6 years.

I only wondered because on nissans configurator it doesn't let you choose anything but a CVT for the nismo and nismo rs

if it's FWD, it's got to be a manual. That's how it is for me on the configurator

Haha one wheel peel sounds funny.

I'm so crazy I want to buy an AWD Gallardo or R8 and convert it to RWD :)

Im... less crazy I'd be happy with a FWD car with 400hp! because why not have al the torquesteer in the world?
And yup, one wheel peels are funny (and fun!) the Jetta's on fairly new rubber, so I got a decent amount of smoke off of it!

FWD with 400 HP?

You are just as crazy!

That torquesteer is scarier to me than trailing throttle oversteer in a 911!!

I don't mind torqusteer, since I can control it with the wheel, oversteer? not so much from my experiences

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > PetarVN, GLI Guy, now with stupid power
07/18/2014 at 17:46

Kinja'd!!!0

But you can control oversteer with the wheel. Just apply some oppo :)

FWD cars are like witchcraft to me because I've never owned one.

I've never even owned an AWD car before.

I once got to race an 80s Celica turbo with AWD on track. I sucked. The prehistoric AWD system really confused my mind. RWD is the only thing that makes sense to me because it's all I've ever driven since I was 16 years old

lucky... I've only driven FWD's, and one AWD (juke NISMO! woo!)
FWD's dip in to corners amazingly, and you can just apply throttle to pull yourself out!

Really?

I always thought when you went into a corner too quick with FWD you had to pray and sacrifice a chicken in hopes of living.

I guess everything I've heard about FWD were lies spread by RWD fanboys, lol

I always assumed RWD's going in to a corner too fast wind up either coming out backwards or hit a tree, so I guess I've heard lies too! :P
and no, FWD's just stick and go through corners, until the grip runs out, and you understeer that is

This is so funny!

We have reached a breakthrough here.

I think we can now create peace in the middle east!

We've found that everyone fears what they don't know.

I should try FWD and you should try RWD. We'll see that neither is scary, they're just different!

RWD doesn't mean you'll definitely spin because you can catch it and be fine.

And FWD doesn't mean that I'll push and hit the tree head on. That's how it seems in my head but maybe if I try it I'll see that I can control it and not total the car!

mustang or civic. Get a manual, this will likely be the last chance you'll have to buy a new vehicle equipped with a manual.

lol. 350z has gotten me out of giving soooo many people rides. Some even insist "ohhh I'll just sit in your tiny back seat, you don't mean you really have NO back seat"

Pull seat forward and open door

"Oh. You were serious."

I'd rather someone else be the DD so I can drink!

Ohhh I was configuring an AWD version. But either way I would suggest testing out the mini. Even the base is super fun with the manual and it's got comfy leather. My mom had an 06 cooper with the 5 speed manual and upgraded to the S last year and theyre super fun to drive. I learned to drive manual in her old one actually
